Journaling or Writing a Diary

Journaling or keeping a diary can be a healing activity. Some of the essential elements of journaling include:

  • Method. Write down your thoughts or reflections in a notebook. Writing by hand involves more of your person than typing on a keyboard. A keyboard is impersonal and should be used when handwriting is not available.
  • Frequency. Write as often as you are able, daily if possible. You will obtain the greatest benefit if you make a commitment to regularly write in your journal and discipline yourself to do so daily. You will probably find yourself looking forward to journaling.
  • Write the date at the beginning of each entry.
  • Choose a theme or topic. I often recommend writing a Gratitude Dairy. You can elaborate on one thing, person, relationship, etc. for which you are thankful and grateful that day. Write several paragraphs. Another option is to write down several things that you are thankful for and try to avoid repeating the same things in subsequent entries. You may find yourself looking for things that you can write about through the day and become more grateful and happier. Some other possible topics include:
    • An Insight journal. Write down the insights you have discovered in prayer or about yourself, others, your relationships, etc.
    • Make a decision. Use a diary to help you make an important decision or to help with something you are struggling with.
    • Writing down your thoughts can help you to see things more clearly by enabling you to decide based on logic rather than strong emotions.
    • See the suggestions entitled How to Make a Good Decision in this section.
    • A prayer journal. Write down your prayers to God and any insights you receive.
    • A reflections on your day journal
    • A success diary. Listing your successes and things you are proud of.
    • Trip diary. When you take a special trip, write down what you did at the end of each day. You can read it later and re-experience your trip.
  • Moleskine Notebooks are very popular for journaling and can be found at most office supply stores. Any notebook will work
  • Find a safe place to keep your notebook private.
